Addition to Jessi's post. Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina

I took these pictures when I was driving from Bulgaria to Croatia and back in the summer of 2003. My wife, Anne, and I would drive for 17-20 hours straight through, because we were too scared to stop.
(above) This was the side of a working restaurant (the food was good). The marks on the side of the building were bullet holes and some larger caliber weapons as well! Every building in these countries was at least this damaged. Many building were in ruins.
One of the highlights of the drive was the UN escort we got through a particularly sketchy area! Most of the crazy stuff we saw we either couldn't take a pictures of, or were too scared to stop.
All the roads had speed limits for army trucks and tanks! In some places the bridges were still bombed out and we had to take detours. Notice the way the pollution hangs in the air. There were some pretty nasty industrial plants near by.
This was the entrance of an army base. Taking a picture like this was very illegal (probably would have gotten me arrested). But I had to get at least one.

slash and burn...

tonight as i was listening to a special on architecture on npr i was struck by a the commants of an architect who specialized in housing for displaced people in disaster area (be it natural or human inflicted). as he spoke about the beginning of his work during the conflict in serbia i was struck and moved to tears. the habit of slaughtering a family or larger group and then utterly destroying the evidence of their existance was called (i think) slash and burn. the goal being to totally remove any sense of their presence in the world. this made me rememeber the command given to the israelites to utterly destroy the nations they conquored. it grieves my heart to realize that this horrible and evil practice could be traced back to and justified with bad theological understanding as a current command of God. Here is a link to the site of this organization. check them out they are incredible.

Grand Finale Gallery Celebration

...with photography by urban youth from Seattle.

@ Seattle YMCA
Triangle Art Gallery
909 4th Avenue
Seattle, WA 98104

Thursday, March 1
5:30-7:00pm

This show will be the culmination of the projects these youth
have worked on over the past 6 months or so. They will also host a panel discussion,
answering questions and sharing why their photography is significant in their lives.

The workshop originated from a woman being inspired by the film Born into Brothels. . . and from the few stories I've heard, it sounds like it has been an incredible experience. Hope you can make it!

cost

hey all,

i was watching the movie "sherrybaby" this evening and began thinking about the question of cost. specifically in regard to this film the cost for the actress to appear naked and be abused/used by almost every man in the film, but also the question of cost in general. what does it cost when we enter fully into a piece of art?
i have begun to think about different roles that i have played or even just auditioned with and what each character has cost me...

any thoughts?

artists and ministers

hi ladies and gents,

came across a good article on theooze.
fun to read someone writing about who
i want to be when i grow up. good read.

here's a quote to get you going:
Artists and ministers know differently though. They know that they are not escaping reality and life and the problems and pains of the world. No, they are diving into them. They roll around in them until they smell like them, until their clothes are stained with them, until they get a bit of them stuck in their teeth. They realize that have not received a pass from human problems, no, they are building their home right in the middle of them.

creating the world that ought to be

hey all,

in just a few weeks, jessi knippel, blaine hogan, paul belk, karen kirsch, and i will be placing our lives in the hands of a pilot and aircraft to cross the country to new york city. there we'll join with artists in various mediums and from various places to come around this idea of Redemptive Culture: Creating the World that Ought to Be.

I wish you could all come!! seriously.

paul, ed traub, and i had the chance to go last year, and it was so inspiring. not until a year later in reflecting did we realize just how monumental the conference had been in our lives. so there is much expectation in returning. we hope to blog while we're there so that you can all be a part of the conversations. if we can't take you all in our bags, at least you can come via blog!

please pray for the nuances of this journey: finding a place to stay, safe travels, no food poisoning, no getting lost, making it to the morning sessions! and other things such as inspiration, comaraderie, vision, connection, soul nourishment, rest...

the dates are february 22-25. we leave late wednesday and return late sunday.

thanks friends. peace to you all, jen

Your thoughts are needed

I'd like to tell you about a photography project that I'll be working on for the next year or two. From what I can tell, basically, I've taken everything that I learned in the first semester and applied it to photography.

I've gotten in contact with brilliant photographers from Palestine, Iran and Venezuela (isn't Flickr.com great?). Basically, the group is going to take photos of people as they are thinking about people who live in countries that are currently at odds with their country. As we work, we're going to give each other access to our photos via the internet. The end result- I want to show the most poignant photos in a gallery facing one another as if they are having a lively and honest conversation. People who visit can decide for themselves what they think that photos are saying to each other. Hopefully, my photos along with the others will be shown in each of the other countries, so it will be an international exhibition.

I'll spare you all the details, but all of the photos will be done with a white background and the same lighting so the people will stand alone and sometimes it might even be hard to tell what country a person comes from.

I've attached some samples of what the format of the pictures will be.

Alright, so if I come up to you sometime and want to take your portrait, you;ll understand.

Please let me know what you think.

Kindlings and Luci Shaw

Anyone a Luci Shaw fan? She'll be sharing in Fremont week after next...I'm mostly curious to go and am looking for company:
The Kindlings Muse--Live At Hales

Also, I thought I'd share one of my favorite websites on film. It is Jeffrey Overstreet's blog. I don't agree with all of his reviews, but I love his sight for his frequent updates on the goings on in the film world:

Iranians are known for their superstitious ways. Sometimes an Iranian will randomly open a book of poems by their countries most beloved poet, Rumi, and trust that his wisdom will guide them. I was doing some research today and came across a book of his poems. I decided to give it a try.

In your light I learn how to love
In your beauty, how to make poems.

You dance inside my chest,
Where no one sees you,

But sometimes I do,
and that sight becomes this art.

Do painters enjoy "worship leading"?

As many of you are of the visual persuasion, I was wondering what your thoughts were with regards to leading worship. I've attended many church services where painters were up front creating during the music or sermon, which I've always thought to be beautiful and diverse. I'm dreaming up a monthly, one hour evening of sacred music at a theater, and have wondered what the painter's experience is. I'm leaning towards having finished art that ties in with the Liturgical Calendar (as the whole evening will tie in as well). Of course, those of you interested in helping with this are absolutely welcomed. So what is it like for you to be up front? To witness others painting?

I've posted this comment on my blog here if you wish to read my current philosophy.

Cheers!
Zadok

just rambling

para mi

went to the studio last night...been avoiding it all week. too much studying to do, i'm already behind. wait, already? i've been behind from the beginning of the term. so maybe if i just hold off on making anything i can get to a place of feeling a little bit better about classes...and then get to work...other work. wait. a handful of little (and a few not-so-little) commissions are waiting...all need to get done before christmas. i need that money to....well...to at least tread water a bit longer. but there's no time to sit with any ideas...just gotta paint and hope that inspiration will find me. God, where did inspiration go?

so i bought another canvas last night...for me. a big one. that's right, it's going to hang in my room. and i painted again...hoping the masses hanging out in the building next door weren't paying attention to the light in my window, shades slantly drawn.

been so hard lately to get alone. alone with work. alone with God. alone with myself. sometimes it feels as though everyone is watching, all the time. probably not true, but it can feel that way.

no wonder so many artists become hermits.

questions to consider

hey all,

some questions for us to consider as this community is emerging from the shadows:

How can we love and support one another to further step into our own unique callings?
[what are collective and individual needs?]

How can we create together?

How can we create with and be a blessing to the greater Mars Hill community?

comment away! this on-going conversation will shape much of what comes... and we would be at a loss without your voice.

Resource lists

Hey all,

I am in the process of beginning to compile some resource lists for student and faculty use. Can you send on any pieces of art, artist resources, and whatnot (especially non western pieces). The hope is that we can have these up soon for all to use. Basically any music, film, books, short stories, and visual art would be great!

Thanks,

Jessi (ladybug@spu.edu)

extra photo equipment?

hey all,

new horizons ministry (located in belltown) is looking for camera equipment to help with one of their projets. they're offering a six-month workshop, with weekly meetings, to help the youth grow in the basics of photograhpy and move toward selling their work in local galleries.

this is an incredible ministry...and right now they pretty much just have disposable cameras, which, you know, doesn't go very far.

so if anyone has stuff they are not using laying around, let me know! also, if you have extra film, photo. books, or any other odds and ends that you think would be helpful, that would indeed be helpful...let me know! thanks. jen

naked

i recent piece i've been working on sparked a lot of questions for me around the theme of sexuality, nudity and eroticism in art. some conversation has occurred on my blog... but i'd love to hear other voices.
join the conversation here.
see my new piece here, it's called "connect with me."

something is coming...

hello friends, just to say briefly, hello and welcome.

we begin anew as a blank slate...a white board with hopes for much vibrant color to follow. your voice, your desires, your longing to create, and your ability to draw out the human heart will conceive of much beauty within our community, the greater of Seattle, and the world.

are you serious about being an artist?

will you step into this calling...?

you, artist, made in the image of the Creator, will change the world simply by being more of yourself and inviting others to witness the maddening glory of the process of creation.
we want to walk with, create with, and hold up one another.

welcome.

art can of course be put into the temple. But it doesn't have to be put into the temple in order to be to the praise of God...an art work can be a doxology in itself. [francis schaeffer]
